Course Details

In this 8 hr. course, participants will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor and includes hands-on practical classroom and shooting range instruction. The Course topics include: gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Students will take a basic written exam covering the materials well covered in the class and complete live fire training with a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range.
  • The firearm(s) to be included in the qualification should be in proper shooting condition.
  • The student should have a basic understanding of the loading/unloading, safety features, and operating functions of the firearm(s) included in the qualification.
  • The ammunition should match the caliber of the firearm(s) used to qualify - contact NSP in advance if you are challenged securing ammunition.
  • All CCW classes, training, and/or certifications are for individuals who are not disqualified from possessing a firearm as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law. Individuals who have been convicted of a crime of violence are disqualified. Student must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. Citizen with a valid CA Driver’s License or DMV Identification Card, or Legal Resident with a Green Card in compliance with U.S. Federal ITAR Regulations.

This course is intended as starting points from which to build lifelong skills. The course is conducted in a traditional classroom and range setting. All participants receive a copy of the NRA’s published Basics of Pistol Shooting, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination on the material covered in the course, complete a NRA Range Qualification, and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor. The course fee includes the use of NSP provided .22 Cal. pistols and ammunition. In this course you will learn, train, and finish the course with a solid foundation on how to safety, ethically, and responsibly own and handle pistols. It is important to note that this course adheres to a recognized nationally standardized curriculum. NRA Certificates of training are recognized in all 50 states and internationally.

Optional: California Firearms Safety Certificate - Upon completion of the Basics course, participants can take the CA DOJ’s Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) for $25.00. This FSC is required to purchase or transfer a firearm at a CA firearms dealer. The decision to pay and take the DOJ FSC test can be made while in the course. A pre-requisite of taking this course is that the applicant is 18 years or older, and has a valid CA Driver’s License or DMV Identification Card.

  • Rim-style or baseball hat
  • Eye protection (also available for loan at the range)
  • Hearing protection (also available for loan at the range)
  • A pen and writing pad for note taking
  • Closed-toe shoes (open toe shoes or sandals are not allowed in the range)
  • No scoop neck or tank-top style shirts.
  • Snacks/drinks/lunch (there are fast food restaurants nearby, and a water cooler is on-site)
